Straily Pillow — Comfort Backplate for Underwater Hockey Masks

The Straily Pillow is a simple upgrade designed to make the Straily underwater hockey mask a whole lot more comfortable to wear.

It's made from TPU, so it's extremely flexible while still being durable enough to handle getting thrown around in the pool. You shouldn't have to worry about it snapping or breaking apart.

How It Improves Comfort

There are two main ways this makes wearing your mask more comfortable:

• Better pressure distribution: The Straily Pillow spreads the pressure from your mask across a much larger area on the back of your head, probably close to twice the surface area of the original backplate.

• No more elastic digging into your head: If you look at the original strap design (pictured in the last photo), you'll notice that it pushes the elastic cords directly against the back of your head. This version holds those cords away from your head and gives you a nice, smooth contour instead.

It's a pretty simple change, but I think it makes a substantial difference in comfort, especially during longer practices.

Adjusting the Fit

Unlike the original backplate, this version doesn't have a dedicated pull tab.

However, the raised sections where the elastic cords pass through make it pretty easy to grab the cords and adjust the fit.

Compatibility & Sizing

This version is intentionally quite long. I tried to make it as long as reasonably possible to maximize the area distributing pressure.

That works really well if you wear your mask underneath your headgear.

However, if you wear your mask over your headgear, this design might not be ideal.

As you can see in the main photo, the elastic cords spread out quite a bit. They could interfere with your snorkel or the ear protection on your headgear.

For those players, a shorter version would probably make more sense.

Feedback & Future Versions

Let me know what you think!

I'm definitely open to making a smaller version for people who wear their masks over their headgear, but I'd like to see whether there's interest in this design first.

If you print one, I'd love to hear how it fits, whether it makes your mask more comfortable, and what you'd change.
